Questions
Frequently asked.
What the app is, what it costs, what it needs, and how to fix the two things that usually go wrong.
- What is Wander?
- Wander is a free iOS travel app that tells you about places around you as you move. It narrates what you are walking or driving past using your live location, surfaces places locals use that visitors miss, builds custom walking and driving tours in seconds, and recommends restaurants by what you are craving.
- Is Wander free?
- The app is free to download, and every account starts with a free balance of tokens. Wander Mode, custom tours, city guides, restaurant searches and museum scans use tokens; navigation does not.
- Where does Wander work?
- Anywhere on earth. Tours, city guides and restaurant picks are made on demand for wherever you are, so there is no list of supported places.
- What platforms does Wander run on?
- iOS, via the App Store. There is no Android or web version at present.
- Does Wander work offline?
- Partly. Navigation and previously downloaded content keep working without a connection, but generating a new tour or city guide needs one, because the content is produced on demand.
- What languages does Wander support?
- Six: English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Chinese. Each one covers both the interface and the spoken narration.
- How is Wander different from Google Maps?
- Google Maps answers a question you already have — you search for a place and it takes you there. Wander works the other way round: it tells you about things you did not know to ask about, based on where you are standing.
- How does Wander pick restaurants?
- You say what you are craving. Wander returns either the best-reviewed places nearby, or hole-in-the-wall picks drawn from what Reddit threads and food blogs rate, and gives a reason each one made the list rather than just a star rating.
- What are hidden gems?
- Places unbeknownst to tourists and beloved by locals. Each one shows on your map as a locked pin — its name and story stay hidden until you earn it, with one of three challenges: solve a riddle written about the place itself, walk a set distance to reach it, or photograph an iconic symbol of the city you are in. Earn it and you get its photo and the reason it is worth the detour.
- How long does it take to generate a tour?
- Seconds. Four quick steps, one per screen — where you want to explore, whether you are walking or driving, what you are interested in, then a review screen to confirm — and the route comes back. Any stop can be swapped afterwards, or the whole route rebuilt.
- Can I use Wander while driving?
- Yes. Wander detects that you are driving and adapts — distances stretch, the map orients to your heading, and Audio Only mode keeps the screen in your pocket.
- Does Wander track my location in the background?
- Wander needs location access while you are using it in order to tell you what is nearby. You can set it to "While Using the App" in iOS Settings. Nothing appears near you if location access is off.
- How do I delete my account?
- Profile, then "Delete my account". It is immediate and cannot be undone.
- I bought tokens and cannot see them.
- Tokens live on your account rather than the device. Check you are signed in as the same user you purchased with. If they are still missing, email support@wander-getlost.com.
- Nothing shows up near me.
- This is almost always location permission. Open iOS Settings, then Privacy & Security, Location Services, Wander, and choose "While Using the App".
